Chapter 4 - Ash and Retribution

The *Borealis Club* was a pulsing monument to decadence and unchecked arrogance. Located in a converted industrial warehouse along the North Branch of the Chicago River, the multi-level venue was packed with the city’s criminal elite, corrupt politicians, and heavily armed Russian foot soldiers.
In the elevated VIP lounge overlooking the dance floor, Nikolai Petrov reclined on a white leather sofa, holding a crystal glass of vintage vodka. He was a man in his early thirties, dressed in an ostentatious silk shirt, his face split by a cocky, arrogant grin.
Sitting across from him were two hulking enforcers. One of them, a man with a prominent scar across his jaw, was nursing a freshly bandaged hand.
"Did she cry?" Nikolai asked, taking a slow sip of his drink.
The scarred enforcer chuckled coarsely. "She looked terrified, boss. We smashed her car to pieces and gave her a taste of the pavement. By now, Cross has probably received the message. He’ll be on his knees begging to sign over the shipping docks by sunrise."
Nikolai threw his head back and laughed. "Cross is weak. He traded his spine for a three-piece suit and a corporate board. He thinks this city is run by lawyers and balance sheets. He doesn't have the stomach for real violence anymore."
Suddenly, the pulsing electronic music died.
The multi-colored strobe lights flickered, died, and were replaced by the harsh, blinding glare of emergency backup halogen lamps. The heavy bass that had reverberated through the floorboards was replaced by a dead, unnatural silence.
On the main floor below, the crowd began to murmur in confusion. Bouncers reached for their earpieces, barking frantic questions into their radios, but only static answered them.
Then, the heavy steel security doors at the front entrance were blown off their hinges.
The explosive breach detonated with a deafening *CRACK*, sending shrapnel and concrete dust tearing through the entryway. Before the smoke could even begin to clear, Dante’s tactical breach team swept inside with brutal, surgical precision. Suppressed gunshots echoed through the cavernous room—clean, rhythmic double-taps that dropped Petrov’s armed bouncers before they could even draw their weapons from their waistbands.
Panic erupted instantly. Civilians and low-level associates screamed, scrambling desperately for the emergency exits, trampling over one another to escape the sudden warzone.
Nikolai leaped to his feet, knocking his crystal glass onto the floor, where it shattered into a hundred pieces. "What the hell is happening?! Who is that?!"
From the shattered entryway, a single figure emerged through the drifting smoke.
Adrian Cross.
He walked with an unhurried, terrifying calmness, ignoring the screams and the chaotic scramble of fleeing patrons. He held a combat pistol at his side, his dark wool coat billowing behind him like the wings of a shadow. Behind him, Dante’s team formed an impenetrable wall, securing every perimeter door and locking down the venue completely.
The scarred enforcer drew a heavy magnum from beneath his jacket, stepping toward the VIP railing to take aim at Adrian.
*THWACK.*
A high-caliber sniper round punched clean through the reinforced glass skylight above, taking the scarred enforcer through the shoulder and pinning him to the floor in a spray of blood before he could even squeeze the trigger. He screamed in agony, clutching his shattered shoulder.
Adrian climbed the metal stairs leading to the VIP mezzanine. His boots clicked rhythmically against the steel steps, each step sounding like the ticking of an execution clock.
Nikolai backed away toward the rear private office, his face draining of all color as he finally realized who had breached his fortress. "Cross! You’re out of your mind! You can't just walk in here and start shooting! The Russian syndicate will wipe you off the face of the earth!"
Adrian reached the top of the stairs. He didn't even look at Nikolai. He walked directly over to the wounded enforcer writhing on the floor—the man with the scar on his jaw.
Adrian placed the sole of his heavy tactical boot directly onto the man’s shattered shoulder, pressing down with immense, deliberate weight.
The enforcer let out a blood-curdling shriek of pure agony.
"Which hand did you use?" Adrian asked, his voice chillingly conversational.
"Go to hell!" the enforcer choked out through gritted teeth and blood.
Adrian didn't ask a second time. He raised his pistol and fired a suppressed round directly through the man’s right wrist, obliterating the bones. The enforcer convulsed, sobbing openly.
"You touched my secretary," Adrian whispered, his eyes boring into the man’s soul with absolute, merciless finality. "You dragged her into the street. You made her bleed."
Adrian raised the barrel of the gun to the man’s forehead.
*Pfft.*
The enforcer went limp instantly.
The silence that followed was absolute, broken only by Nikolai’s ragged, terrified breathing. The arrogant syndicate heir was now trembling violently, his back pressed hard against the locked office door, a puddle of sweat forming along his hairline.
Adrian turned slowly to face Nikolai. He stepped over the corpse without looking down, his dark eyes locking onto the trembling Russian.
"Adrian... please," Nikolai stammered, raising his hands defensively. His bravado had completely disintegrated into pathetic desperation. "It was just business! A territorial dispute! I didn't know the girl meant anything to you! She's just an accountant! I'll pay for her medical bills! I’ll give you the North Ward docks! Take everything!"
Adrian stopped three feet away from him. The smell of gunsmoke and ozone hung thick in the air between them.
"Her name is Audrey Miller," Adrian said, every syllable dripping with cold venom. "And she is worth more than your entire bloodline."
Nikolai dropped to his knees, tears of pure terror tracking down his flushed cheeks. "Please... don't kill me. My father... my father will give you whatever you want."
Adrian tilted his head slightly. "Your father is already dead, Nikolai. My teams secured your family’s compound in Lake Forest twenty minutes ago."
Nikolai’s eyes widened in sheer, paralyzing horror. The realization that his entire empire, his family, and his entire support structure had been systematically dismantled in a single hour completely broke his spirit.
Adrian raised his weapon, leveling it between Nikolai’s eyes.
"Tell your ancestors that Adrian Cross sent you," Adrian said quietly.
*Pfft.*
Nikolai collapsed onto the expensive hardwood floor.
Adrian lowered the weapon, turned to Dante, and calmly adjusted the cuffs of his tactical sweater.
"Burn the building to the ground," Adrian ordered smoothly. "Leave nothing standing. Let the rest of this city understand what happens when they touch what belongs to me."
"Understood, boss," Dante responded with a crisp nod.
Adrian walked back down the metal stairs, stepped through the shattered entrance of the burning club, and walked out into the pouring rain. The storm washed the speckles of blood from his coat as he climbed back into his vehicle.
He checked his watch.
