Chapter 10 - Bloodlines and Bravery

The lock on Room 312 clicked. The door slowly swung open. A young woman with
Claire's warm brown eyes and soft features sat in a specialized motorized
wheelchair, clutching a heavy fire extinguisher in her lap. "Claire?!" Lily
cried out, bursting into tears. Claire dropped to her knees, throwing her arms
around her younger sister, pulling her into a fierce, desperate embrace. "I'm
here, I'm here," Claire wept, burying her face in Lily's neck. "You're safe.
It's over. It's completely over." Lily looked over her sister's shoulder, seeing
the armed men in tactical gear, the shattered hallway, and the towering,
imposing figure of Roman DeLuca standing guard in the doorway. "Claire... who is
that?" Lily whispered, trembling.
Roman stepped forward, slowly holstering his weapon, his expression softening
into pure gentleness. He knelt down on one knee in front of Lily's wheelchair,
bringing himself to eye level with the young woman. "I am Roman DeLuca," he said
quietly. "I am the man who owes your sister and your father a debt I can never
fully repay. And from this moment on, you and Claire will never have to be
afraid of anything in this world again."

Arthur Mercer groaned from the hallway floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder as
two state troopers—escorted by DeLuca's private security—cuffed his hands behind
his back. "You'll never get away with this, DeLuca," Arthur spat, blood bubbling
on his lips. "The federal authorities will tear your empire apart!" Roman stood
up and walked out into the corridor, looking down at the ruined mogul with cold
disgust. "The federal authorities are currently reviewing forty-two million
dollars of embezzlement documents your daughter tried to burn," Roman said,
tossing Thomas Bennett's original ledger onto Arthur's chest. "Your assets have
already been transferred into a trust fund under Claire and Lily Bennett's
names. You will spend the rest of your miserable life in a federal penitentiary,
Arthur. And every time you eat prison slop, remember that it was Thomas
Bennett's daughters who put you there."
As the state troopers dragged Arthur Mercer away into the blizzard, the morning
sun began to break through the gray clouds over Connecticut. The golden light
spilled through the shattered hallway windows, reflecting off the pristine,
fresh snow. Claire stood in the doorway of her sister's room, holding Lily's
hand, watching Roman. Roman turned around. His dark eyes found Claire's across
the ruined corridor. He walked toward her, stopped inches away, and reached out
to take both of her hands in his. "Let's go home, Claire," Roman said softly.
"Home?" Claire asked, her voice trembling with hope. "To DeLuca House," Roman
replied, smiling for the first time in what felt like years. "Where you belong."
