Chapter 4 - The Unmasking of Vanessa Langford and the Midnight Emergency Delivery

The panic inside Marino Tower quickly escalated into complete chaos. By mid-afternoon, news of Dominic Marino’s suspension had leaked to the financial press, sending the company’s stock plunging fifteen percent in hours.
Dominic retreated to his penthouse office, tearing off his tie, his phone ringing relentlessly with calls from furious creditors, media reporters, and board members.
Vanessa burst into the room, her designer mask completely slipping. Her face was twisted with panic. “Dominic! The bank just notified me that my consulting account is frozen! They’re saying my assets are subject to a corporate fraud investigation! You have to fix this!”
Dominic turned on her, his eyes wild with rage. “Is that all you care about? The money? I am facing bankruptcy and prison time, Vanessa!”
“You promised me I would take her place!” Vanessa shrieked, slamming her purse onto his desk. “You said she was a weak, pathetic housewife who would take a small settlement and disappear! You told me you had everything under control!”
Dominic stared at her as if seeing her true face for the very first time. The allure, the sweet words, the manufactured elegance—it was all an illusion designed to siphon his wealth. “You never cared about me. You used my ego against me.”
Vanessa let out a mocking, bitter laugh. “Did you really think a twenty-six-year-old woman fell in love with a middle-aged mafia-tied executive out of romance? You were a golden ticket, Dominic. But you’re an idiot who threw away the only woman who actually protected you from yourself.”
Before Dominic could respond, two plainclothes investigators from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office stepped into the office doorway, displaying gold badges. “Vanessa Langford? You need to come with us for questioning regarding wire fraud and corporate embezzlement.”
Vanessa turned pale, backing away, but there was nowhere left to run. She was escorted out of the building in handcuffs as the media flashed cameras in the lobby below.
Dominic stood entirely alone in the cavernous office. The silence was deafening. He fell into his leather chair, burying his face in his trembling hands. A single thought echoed in his mind like a tormenting ghost: What have I done?
Suddenly, his private phone rang. It was an unrecognized number. He snatched it up desperately. “Hello? Carrie?”
“Mr. Marino,” an urgent, professional voice spoke. “This is Dr. Bennett’s office at Westchester Presbyterian Hospital. Your wife was admitted forty-five minutes ago with severe placental abruption. Her blood pressure has spiked to critical levels. She is undergoing an emergency Cesarean section right now.”
The world stopped spinning. The money, the power, the boardroom, the scandal—everything vanished into complete insignificance.
“Is she... is she alive?” Dominic choked out, his voice cracking.

“Both the mother and child are in extreme danger. If you want to see them, you need to get here immediately.”
Dominic sprinted out of the office, abandoning his phone, his documents, and his empire, racing blindly into the stormy night toward the hospital.
