Episode 10: The Midpoint Betrayal

The crimson warning on Claire’s phone screen pulsed like an irregular heartbeat in the darkened hallway. “CRITICAL SECURITY BREACH: DATABASE DELETION IN PROGRESS.” The pouring rain beat a frantic rhythm against the windows of her house, matching the frantic calculation swirling in her mind. Someone inside Vance Global Holdings was systematically erasing the digital evidence of the fraud. But to execute a wipe of this magnitude using her credentials, they didn't just need her password; they needed the physical security token—the encrypted key drive that never left her possession.

Unless there was a duplicate.

Claire sprinted back into her home office, her wet coat dripping onto the Persian rug. She opened the bottom drawer of her desk, reaching for the velvet-lined lockbox where she kept her emergency administrative backups. Her hands shook as she punched in the biometric code. The lid clicked open.

The small, silver backup drive was gone. In its place lay a single, dried white rosebud—a mocking calling card left by someone who knew her habits intimately.

Claire fell back against her chair, the breath completely knocked out of her. It hadn't been Ethan. Ethan didn't have the combination to this box. He didn't even know it existed. Only one other person had helped her organize this office when she moved her consulting firm home after her grandmother’s passing.

Sarah.

Sarah Vance, Ethan’s younger sister. The quiet, soft-spoken girl Claire had protected from her family's toxic dynamics for years. Sarah, whom Claire had hired as her personal executive assistant, treating her more like a younger sister than an employee. Claire had given her a salary, a safe haven, and absolute trust.

The betrayal hit Claire with a physical force that made her chest tighten. She picked up her phone and dialed Sarah’s number, her heart hammering against her ribs. The line rang three times before Sarah answered. The background was quiet, save for the distinct, low hum of server fans.

"Claire?" Sarah’s voice was trembling, stripped of its usual innocent, youthful cadence.

"Where are you, Sarah?" Claire whispered, her voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. "Are you at the downtown office?"

A heavy, suffocating silence stretched over the line. Then, a ragged sob broke through. "I’m sorry, Claire. I’m so sorry. They... they told me it was the only way to save our family. My dad... he said if the federal investigators find the secondary ledger, he and Ethan will go away for twenty years. They’re going to take my mother's house. We’ll be left with nothing."

"So you decided to ensure that I am left with nothing instead?" Claire’s voice cracked, the raw emotional pain finally bleeding through her iron exterior. "I protected you, Sarah. I gave you a job, a life away from their manipulation. I trusted you with my grandmother’s legacy!"

"You don't understand!" Sarah cried out, her voice turning frantic, tinged with a desperate, brainwashed loyalty. "Blood is thicker than water, Claire! Madison told me what you did at the Hamptons gala. You’re trying to destroy us. My father promised that if I wipe the master drive tonight, they’ll set up a trust for me in Switzerland. I won't have to be the poor, forgotten Vance daughter anymore. I’m doing what I have to do to survive."

"Sarah, listen to me," Claire pleaded, trying to find a wedge through the girl's panic as the deletion progress bar on her phone screen ticked past forty percent. "They are using you. Richard and Madison don't care about your survival. The moment you press the final delete key, your digital footprint will be the only one left on that server. They are framing you to protect themselves!"

A sharp rustle echoed over the line, followed by the sound of a door opening. A cold, familiar voice hijacked the call.

"She isn't listening to you anymore, Claire."

It was Madison. Her voice was dripping with venomous triumph, entirely recovered from her humiliation in the Hamptons. "Sarah did exactly what a real family member does. She chose us. By midnight, your precious forensic trail will be a digital graveyard. The Vanguard Logistics files we planted will be the only evidence left for the IRS. You wanted to play the hero, Claire? Look around you. Your client contracts are gone, your security system is destroyed, your family name is tarnished, and now your own assistant has handed us the match to burn the rest of your life to the ground."

"Madison, don't do this," Claire hissed, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the phone.

"Goodbye, Claire. Enjoy the rain," Madison laughed, a sharp, cruel sound before the line went completely dead.
