Episode 2: The Price of Silence
The heavy, metallic thud of the front door echoed through the grand foyer, reverberating in my chest like a death knell. The flashing red and blue lights cast erratic, bloody shadows across the living room walls. Through the sheer curtains, I could see three police officers standing on the porch.
Dominick’s smile was sharp, a jagged blade of triumph cutting through the brief victory I had just tasted. He held the phone inches from my eyes, the video looping seamlessly. Me. A dark parking lot. A thick manila envelope passing into the hands of a federal fugitive.
"They are waiting, Evelyn," Dominick whispered, his voice a sickening, warm purr against my ear. "One word from me, one tap on this screen to forward the video to the detective at the door, and your new kingdom becomes a prison cell. Do we burn together, or do you burn alone?"
My heart hammered against my ribs, not from fear for myself, but from the crushing weight of the secret inside that envelope. Dominick thought I was selling corporate secrets. He thought I was greedy, just like him. He didn’t know that the envelope contained the stolen medical trial records of a restricted drug—the only drug capable of keeping my terminally ill father alive for another year. The man I met was a rogue researcher who had risked everything to help me. If the police saw this, the research would be seized, the researcher would be jailed, and my father would die within weeks.
Ursula slowly stood up from the sofa, the color returning to her face as she smoothed down her expensive jacket. The terror in her eyes had morphed back into her trademark arrogance. "Oh, how the tables turn," she mocked, adjusting her pearls. "From the owner of the trust to a common criminal in a matter of seconds. Open the door, Dominick. Let’s let the officers see what kind of woman we’ve been harboring."
"Wait," the word tore from my throat, raw and trembling.
Dominick paused, his thumb hovering over the send button. His eyes locked onto mine, drinking in my desperation. "I'm listening, my love."
"A truce," I forced the words past the lump in my throat, my vision blurring with tears of anger. "The trust remains under my management. You both stay in this house. But you do not touch my father's medical affairs, and you delete that video."
Dominick let out a low, mocking laugh. "A truce? No, Evelyn. A truce implies equality. This is a surrender. You will sign over the monthly dividends of the trust to my mother’s account. You will publicly apologize to her for this 'misunderstanding.' And as for the video? I keep it. Consider it insurance for your continued good behavior."
Before I could answer, the doorbell rang again, louder, more urgent.
"Decide. Now," Dominick hissed.
Looking at the hallway, I felt a tear slip down my cheek. I had the power to ruin them legally, but doing so would cost my father his life. Love made you strong, but it also made you fragile. "Fine," I whispered, the word tasting like ash. "We play it your way. For now."
Dominick smirked, slipped his phone into his pocket, and walked briskly to the front door. I watched his posture change instantly from a predatory blackmailer to a stressed, upstanding citizen.
"Officers! Thank goodness you're here," Dominick’s voice boomed through the hallway as he opened the door. "I apologize for the delay. We had a bit of a security scare with our alarm system."
A stern-faced detective stepped into the foyer, his eyes scanning the room, lingering on the scattered papers on the rug and then on me. "Mr. and Mrs. Vance? We received an anonymous tip about a high-profile individual matching a federal warrant entering this neighborhood tonight. We're checking all residences with private security feeds."
My breath hitched. They were looking for the researcher.
Ursula stepped forward, casting a venomous glance at me before looking at the detective with a sweet, grandmotherly smile. "Oh, officer, we haven't seen anyone. My daughter-in-law here was just organizing some old family documents. It's been a very quiet evening."
The detective looked at me, his gaze piercing. "Is that correct, ma'am? You look a bit shaken."
Dominick’s hand found the small of my back. To the detective, it looked like a comforting gesture. To me, it was a vice, his fingers digging into my spine, reminding me of the video in his pocket.
"I'm just tired, Officer," I said, forcing my voice to remain steady, though my hands were shaking. "It's been a long day caring for my sick father."
The detective nodded slowly, though his eyes remained suspicious. "Very well. If you notice anything unusual on your cameras, contact us immediately."
As the officers turned to leave, the detective paused, reaching into his pocket. "Oh, Mrs. Vance—Evelyn Vance, correct? A courier dropped this off at the station earlier, claiming it fell from a vehicle registered to this address near the downtown district. He said it belonged to you."
He handed me a small, clear evidence bag. Inside was a plain, black leather glove—one of mine. But as I took the bag, my fingers brushed against something hard hidden inside the lining of the glove. A small, square object. A microchip.
My heart stopped. The researcher hadn't just taken the envelope. He had slipped something back into my possession without me knowing.
"Thank you," I murmured, clutching the bag tightly.
The moment the front door closed and the police car pulled away, Dominick violently shoved me back toward the sofa. "Give me that," he snapped, reaching for the evidence bag.
But I was already moving. I retreated into the kitchen, slamming the heavy wooden door behind me and locking it just as Dominick threw his weight against it.
"Evelyn! Open this door right now!" he roared, rattling the handle.
With trembling hands, I tore open the plastic bag, ripped the lining of the glove, and pulled out the tiny microchip. Beside it was a scrap of paper with a messy, hurried handwriting that sent a shockwave of terror straight to my soul.

“Evelyn, the espionage was a setup by Dominick. But the files on this chip are real. Look at the data from 2016. Your mother didn’t die of an illness. They stopped her heart.”
The kitchen window shattered. A dark silhouette reached through the broken glass, grasping for my throat.
