Episode 3: The Bloodline's Betrayal

The world collapsed into a singular, agonizing heartbeat. Under the rhythmic, bloody pulses of the emergency lights, Matteo Duca stared across the polished marble lobby at the ghosts of his past. The air grew heavier, thick with the scent of ozone and impending death, as the digital floor clock mercilessly shaved away the remaining seconds: 04:59... 04:58... 04:57...
Victor Duca stood flanked by the vault's cold steel, his tailored suit immaculate, his smile carrying the toxic arrogance of a younger brother who had spent a lifetime nursing a bitter grudge. But Matteo’s eyes didn't linger on Victor. They were violently pulled to the woman beside him.
Eleanor.
Fifteen years of grief, fifteen years of convincing himself that she was buried in a nameless grave to keep her safe from his sins, shattered in a single breath. Her face was paler, her beautiful features etched with the phantom lines of time and terror, but those fierce, defiant eyes were undeniably hers. The bright red laser dot of a hidden sniper pulsed right over her left brow, a microscopic bead of light that held the power to end her life in a fraction of a second.
"Surprised, little brother?" Victor’s voice echoed through the intercom speakers, stripped of its digital masking, sounding smooth, hollow, and venomous. "You always thought you were the smartest Duca. The protector. The savior. But you left her unprotected the moment you gave her that account. You handed me the ultimate leverage."
"Let her go, Victor," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a register that was terrifyingly calm. The raging mafia boss inside him had went entirely cold, replaced by a calculating predator. Behind his back, he signaled subtly to Caleb, who was subtly shifting his weight, calculating angles through the blinding red flashes. "This is between us. It has always been between us."
"Oh, it is between us. But Eleanor isn't just a hostage, Matteo. She’s the catalyst," Victor sneered, stepping closer to Eleanor, gently running the barrel of his gold-plated weapon along her jawline. Eleanor flinched, but her eyes remained locked onto Matteo, silently pleading—not for her own life, but for the little girl hidden behind the heavy mahogany teller counter.
From the shadows of the desk, Norah peered out, her small hands covering her mouth, her eyes widening as she recognized the woman. "Mommy...?" she whispered, her voice a fragile thread easily swallowed by the roaring alarms.
The sound of that tiny voice caused Eleanor’s composure to break. A single tear cut through the dust on her cheek. "Matteo, don't look at me," Eleanor cried out, her voice raw. "Protect our daughter! He doesn't want the money, he wants the empire!"
Our daughter.
The words struck Matteo with a force greater than any bullet he had ever taken. Norah wasn't just Eleanor’s child. She was his. The stubborn chin, the dry blue eyes in the face of terror—it wasn't just Eleanor's ghost. It was the Duca bloodline. The $62.4 million wasn't an old safety net; it was a trust fund locked by Eleanor to ensure that if anything happened to her, Norah would eventually be brought to the only man capable of keeping her alive. And Victor had hijacked it to wipe out the entire lineage in one swift stroke.
"Ten minutes was a lie, Matteo," Victor laughed, his thumb pressing down on the gold detonator. "Why wait for neurotoxins when we can end this beautifully right now?"
The digital clock on the floor skipped violently, the numbers rewiring themselves, accelerating wildly. 00:30... 00:29... 00:28...
The billionaires in the lobby shrieked, stampeding toward the vault doors away from the center of the room. Panic turned into absolute anarchy.
"Caleb, now!" Matteo roared.
In a split second of synchronized violence, Caleb lunged from the shadows, drawing his weapon and firing three precise shots into the upper mezzanine, shattering the hidden optical lenses and the sniper's nest. A body crashed through the glass railing, tumbling into the fountain below.
At the same instant, Matteo sprinted across the blood-lit marble directly toward Victor. Victor fired wildly, the bullet tearing through Matteo’s shoulder, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the absolute fury blinding him. Matteo tackled his brother into the vault door, the gold detonator slipping from Victor's grip and sliding across the floor.
"You think you can take my family?!" Matteo growled, slamming his fist into Victor’s jaw.

But Victor smiled through the blood pooling in his mouth, pointing a trembling finger toward the floor. The clock read: 00:03... 00:02... 00:01...
The sound of a heavy pneumatic hiss echoed from the ceiling vents. A thick, pale mist began to pour into the locked bank lobby. Matteo lunged for Eleanor, wrapping his arms around her and throwing them both toward the floor as a deafening electronic screech cut through the air, followed by a total, suffocating darkness.
