Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The crystal champagne flutes slipped from Robert Hayes’s trembling fingers,
shattering against the antique Persian rug with a sharp, echoing crash. The
older man’s face drained of all color, his aristocratic composure disintegrating
into unadulterated panic as he stared at the drenched, heavily armed billionaire
standing in the doorway.
"Alexander...?" Hayes stammered, taking an involuntary step backward toward the
massive stone hearth. "You... you were supposed to be in the Boston penthouse...
the surveillance feed—"
"Your mercenaries were sloppy, Robert," Alexander said, his voice flat,
dangerously calm, the barrel of his weapon never wavering from Julian Sterling’s
chest. "And you vastly underestimated the mother of my child."
Julian Sterling, however, did not flinch. A slow, sinister smile spread across
his sharply chiseled face. He wore an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, utterly
unbothered by the violent nor'easter howling against the panoramic windows of
the coastal estate. He slowly set his crystal glass down on the mahogany side
table, his eyes glinting with psychopathic amusement.
"Alexander Pierce. The great corporate titan in the flesh," Julian purred, his
accent smooth, European, and dripping with venom. "I must admit, your survival
instincts are commendable. But walking in here alone? That is pure,
unadulterated arrogance."
"I didn't come to negotiate, Julian," Alexander said, stepping further into the
room, cutting off their path toward the rear exit. "The DOJ, Interpol, and the
United States Cyber Command have already received Catherine’s decryption
package. Within fifteen minutes, federal marshals will raid every property, bank
account, and shell company associated with Project Apex. Your revenge scheme
died the moment I pulled my son out of that Boston apartment."
Hayes let out a strangled, terrified gasp. "Julian! You told me our financial
trails were completely insulated! You said the federal authorities would never
link the offshore accounts to my name!"
"Shut up, you pathetic old fool," Julian snapped without looking at Hayes.
Julian’s cold, predatory gaze remained locked onto Alexander. "You think a few
regulatory raids frighten me, Alexander? This was never about money. This was
about retribution. Your self-righteous crusade four years ago destroyed my
brother's life. Marcus built an empire, and you tore it down to satisfy your
moral superiority. You made him hang himself in a prison cell!"
"Marcus Sterling was selling compromised guidance chips to foreign adversaries
that were getting American soldiers killed in combat," Alexander replied, his
finger tightening incrementally on the trigger. "Your brother was a traitor and
a murderer. And you are nothing more than a coward who terrorizes women and
starving children from the shadows."
Julian’s mask of calm slipped, a flash of pure, demonic rage twisting his
features. "You will never leave this room alive, Pierce."
With lightning-fast speed, Julian reached beneath his suit jacket, not for a
gun, but for a heavy tactical detonator.
"Do you know why I let you reach the cistern, Alexander?" Julian snarled, his
thumb hovering over the red arming switch. "Because I knew Catherine was your
weak spot! The moment my exterior perimeter sensors detected a breach in the
drainage tunnel, I armed twelve blocks of C4 plastic explosives wired directly
into the lighthouse's foundation pillars!"
Alexander’s heart slammed into his throat. "Catherine is already out of the
cistern."
"She’s in the drainage tunnel!" Julian laughed maniacally. "And when I collapse
these bluffs into the Atlantic Ocean, the entire cliffside will crush that
tunnel like a tin can! Your wife, your ex-SAS dog, and you will all be buried
under three thousand tons of granite!"
"No!" Hayes screamed in terror, realizing Julian was willing to commit suicide
to fulfill his vendetta. "Julian, stop! We can still take the helicopter on the
roof!"
Julian ignored Hayes, his thumb slamming down toward the detonator.
PANG.
Alexander fired instantly. The high-velocity round tore through Julian’s right
shoulder, spinning him backward against the glass display case. The detonator
flew from Julian’s hand, skittering across the hardwood floor toward the open
fireplace.
"Hayes! Grab the detonator!" Julian roared, clutching his bleeding shoulder as
he drew a compact automatic pistol from his ankle holster with his left hand.
Hayes scrambled across the floor like a desperate animal, lunging for the remote
switch.
Alexander surged forward, closing the distance in three violent strides. He
kicked the heavy mahogany coffee table across the rug, slamming it into Hayes's
ribs and knocking the traitorous vice chairman sprawling across the floor,
gasping for air.
Simultaneously, Julian opened fire, bullets ripping through the leather
armchairs and shattering the towering French doors behind Alexander.
Alexander ducked behind the reinforced stone pillar of the fireplace, returning
controlled, precise fire that pinned Julian behind the heavy oak bar.
"You're out of time, Julian!" Alexander shouted over the deafening echoes of
gunfire and the roar of the storm. "Your mercenaries outside have already been
neutralized by my maritime strike team! Give up the detonator, and you might
survive to see a federal courtroom!"
"I'd rather burn in hell with your entire bloodline!" Julian screamed back.
Julian lunged from behind the bar, firing wildly, diving across the open floor
toward the fallen detonator lying near the hearth.
Alexander stepped out from behind the pillar, his weapon aimed with lethal
precision. He fired two rounds into Julian’s right thigh and left forearm,
dropping the assassin onto his stomach inches from the explosive trigger.
Alexander stepped forward, his heavy tactical boot coming down with crushing
force onto Julian’s wrist, pinning the man's hand to the floorboards. With his
other foot, Alexander kicked the detonator across the room, out of reach.
Julian groaned in agony, coughing blood onto the floor, but his venomous eyes
glared up at Alexander with unyielding hatred. "Kill me, then... do it, Pierce.
Prove to your son that you're just as much of a monster as I am."
Alexander stared down at the broken, bleeding architect of his family’s
nightmare. His finger rested against the trigger of his weapon. Every fiber of
his being screamed to execute the man who had starved his son and tortured
Catherine.
Then, the memory of Tommy’s gentle voice echoed in Alexander's mind: Go get Mom,
Dad.
Alexander slowly lowered the barrel of his weapon, clicking the manual safety
back into place.
"Death is far too easy an escape for you, Julian," Alexander said with chilling
authority. "You are going to spend the rest of your natural life in a
maximum-security federal penitentiary, watching from a concrete cell as my
company thrives, my family heals, and your brother's name is completely erased
from history."
Suddenly, from the ruined French doors leading to the balcony, the beam of a
high-powered tactical searchlight illuminated the room.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR!"
Six heavily armed FBI Hostage Rescue Team operatives breached the shattered
glass, accompanied by Sarah Vance, whose eyes widened in relief upon seeing
Alexander standing unharmed.
Alexander stepped back, raising his hands calmly as the federal agents swarmed
the room, securing Julian Sterling in tactical restraints and placing Robert
Hayes in double-locked handcuffs.

Sarah walked over to Alexander, throwing a heavy tactical coat over his soaked
shoulders. "Alex... Catherine made it to the boat. Dominic and our medical team
have her stabilized. She's asking for you."
Alexander let out a long, ragged breath, the crushing weight of the last
twenty-four hours finally lifting from his chest. "Let's go home, Sarah."
