Chapter 4 - The Stolen Diamond and the False Arrest

Two days before the grand ceremony at the Cathedral of Christ the King, Olivia decided it was time for the grand finale of her smear campaign.

At approximately 11:00 AM, Sophie was on her knees in the master suite, vacuuming the plush wool rug.

Olivia walked into the bedroom, holding her velvet jewelry case. She looked around, casually walked past Sophie, and went into the walk-in closet.

The hidden ceiling camera inside the closet captured the entire sequence with crystalline clarity: Olivia opened her safe, pulled out an heirloom five-carat diamond tennis bracelet valued at over $80,000, slipped it into her pocket, and walked over to Sophie’s canvas work tote bag hanging on the utility hook by the laundry chute.

With a wicked smirk, Olivia slid the diamond bracelet into the bottom lining of Sophie’s bag, burying it beneath her nursing textbooks and a pencil case.

Thirty minutes later, the entire estate descended into fabricated chaos.

“My bracelet! My diamond bracelet is gone!” Olivia’s shrill screams echoed through the grand corridors.

She ran down the grand staircase, bursting into the study where Michael was sitting with his father, Robert, and Olivia’s wealthy parents, Richard and Eleanor Vance.

“It was in my jewelry box an hour ago!” Olivia sobbed hysterically, dabbing at fake tears with a silk handkerchief. “I left the room for ten minutes while Sophie was vacuuming, and now it’s completely vanished! That bracelet was a gift from my grandmother!”

Robert Vance stood up, his face hardening. “Call the police immediately, Michael. I told you that girl couldn’t be trusted.”

“Let’s not jump to conclusions,” Michael said, his voice eerily calm, masking the raging volcano within him. “We shouldn’t accuse anyone without a search.”

“Search her bag right now!” Olivia demanded, leading the group toward the laundry room. “She keeps her personal tote right here. If she has nothing to hide, she won’t mind!”

Sophie was standing in the laundry room, trembling as the entire family stormed in. Two Buckhead police officers, whom Olivia had secretly pre-called under the guise of an “active burglary in progress,” walked through the service entrance.

“Officer, search that bag!” Olivia pointed an accusing, manicured finger.

The lead officer opened Sophie’s canvas tote. He reached to the bottom, pulled out the heavy diamond tennis bracelet, and held it up to the light.

Sophie gasped, collapsing against the washer, her hands covering her mouth. “No... no! I swear to God, I didn’t take it! I’ve never seen that before! Mr. Michael, please believe me! I would never steal anything!”

Olivia turned to the officers, her voice dripping with triumphant venom. “Arrest her. Take this thief out of my house in handcuffs!”

The officer unclipped his cuffs and moved toward the sobbing girl.

“Hold on,” Michael’s commanding voice cut through the room like a razor blade.

Everyone froze.

“Michael, what are you doing?” Olivia hissed, her eyes flashing with irritation. “She stole eighty thousand dollars from me! She’s going to jail!”

Michael looked at the police officer, then directly into Olivia’s cold eyes. “Officer, do not touch her. I am the sole owner of this property. No charges will be filed today.”

“Michael, are you insane?!” his father roared.

“Sophie will be placed on paid administrative leave until after the wedding on Saturday,” Michael stated calmly, turning his back on Olivia’s furious glare. “We will handle the matter of the bracelet after our vows are exchanged. We have a wedding to focus on, don’t we, darling?”

Olivia blinked, caught off guard by his sudden compliance. She quickly composed herself, assuming Michael was simply trying to avoid a public scandal before the high-society event of the season.

“Fine,” Olivia sighed with fake magnanimity. “For the sake of our families, we won’t let a common thief ruin our wedding day. But the moment the reception is over, she goes to prison.”

“Agreed,” Michael said, a terrifyingly dark smile playing on his lips. “Everything will be settled at the altar.”
