PAST 1 My child grew up surrounded by the stench of a rotting corpse—what my husband calls 'the scent of home'.

The morning sun in the Miller household was always curated, filtering through pristine white curtains to illuminate a portrait of suburban success. Julian flipped pancakes with a practiced, warm smile, though he kept his right hand heavily wrapped in white gauze. When Elena questioned the injury, he brushed it off as a clumsy slip at the woodshop, a minor accident while building furniture for the nursery. Elena smiled back, though her pregnancy had sharpened her senses to a point that felt like a superpower. Beneath the smell of maple syrup, she caught a faint, metallic hint of blood that made her stomach churn, but she stayed silent, watching her husband maintain his perfect facade.

As soon as the children were out in the backyard, Julian’s mask dropped. He bolted the basement door and descended into the shadows, his breathing coming in ragged gasps. He grabbed a jug of industrial-strength bleach and began scrubbing a specific patch of the concrete floor with a frantic, jagged energy. As he worked, the friction reopened the wound on his hand, and his own blood mixed with the caustic chemicals. Memories of the murder night hit him like a physical blow—the rain drumming on the glass, Amber’s hysterical threats to expose their affair, and the sickening silence that followed after she fell. He looked at the floorboards he had installed over the fresh concrete, desperate to believe he had buried his secret deep enough.

The heavy thump of the basement door unlocking startled him. Elena stood at the top of the stairs with a laundry basket, her face contorting at the suffocating smell of chemicals. Julian rushed to block her path, claiming he was treating a toxic mold outbreak to protect the baby. But through the sting of bleach, Elena’s keen nose caught something else—a faint, feminine scent of jasmine. When she pointed it out, Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs, and he quickly ushered her upstairs, claiming it was just a new detergent. He didn't notice the drop of fresh blood from his bandage that smeared onto the sleeve of her white cardigan as he pushed her away from the cellar.

The suspicion followed Elena into the evening. While Julian was supposedly working late in his office, she went out to the car to retrieve her prenatal vitamins. Reaching into the glove compartment, her fingers brushed against a small, elegant glass bottle: Jasmine Night. It was the signature scent of Amber, Julian’s designer who had vanished a week ago. Elena opened the cap, the cloying sweetness confirming her fears. Beside the perfume lay a crumpled pregnancy test showing two distinct pink lines. She leaned against the seat, cold realization washing over her. She was already five months pregnant; the test wasn't hers. Elena looked up at the house and saw Julian’s silhouette standing perfectly still at the window, watching her in the darkness. She realized then that the perfect life she had built was a lie, and the man she loved was a stranger standing over a grave.
