Obama's Power Play: The Secret Strategy to Regain Control and Reshape America's Future
Recently, former U.S. President Barack Obama appeared in a new advertisement urging support for Proposition 50 – an initiative that California Governor Gavin Newsom and his Democratic allies hope will boost voter turnout ahead of next month's special election.
“California, the whole country is looking to you,” Obama said in the video, emphasizing the national importance of this vote. “On November 4th, your vote is the choice for democracy.”
Although not explicitly mentioning Trump, the current president's image is still present in the advertisement as Obama accuses the Republican Party of “trying to manipulate the upcoming election.”
“The Republicans want to steal enough seats in Congress to manipulate the next election and maintain absolute power for another two years. You can stop them now,” Obama said, looking directly into the camera.
According to AP, Proposition 50 is designed to redraw the boundaries of California's congressional districts, aiming to consolidate Democratic power in Congress.
Observers believe this is a strategic move to counterbalance Trump's advances in Texas and other states, where he is seeking to help Republicans gain more seats in the 2026 midterm elections.
Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom described the vote as a “referendum on everything about Donald Trump”—a figure unpopular with voters in a liberal state like California, except in some conservative areas. Voting on the proposal has begun and will close on November 4th.
Meanwhile, Republicans and opposition groups argue that Proposition 50 is a “power grab” by the Democrats, undermining electoral boundaries established by an independent committee formed by voters more than a decade ago to ensure fairness. Currently, the Republican Party holds a slim majority in the House of Representatives with 219 seats compared to 213 for the Democratic Party, plus 3 vacant seats.
If passed, the new California electoral map could cost the Republican Party up to 5 seats, while strengthening the position of Democratic representatives in contested districts. The Democrats could then control 48 out of 52 House seats in the state, instead of the current 43.
In fact, Obama publicly supported Newsom's campaign to redistrict the electoral districts at a fundraising event in August, viewing it as an effort to balance the influence of Republican-controlled states like Texas – which is actively redrawing its electoral map to consolidate power.
He also shared similar views on social media. However, his direct appearance in the advertisement marks his highest level of involvement in the campaign yet.
