Episode 1: The Shattered Mirror

The silence that followed my voice was suffocating. For six months, I believed I had found a sanctuary with Victoria—a woman who smiled at my jokes, held my hand during sleepless nights, and promised to love Lily as her own. Now, looking at the leather belt on the floor and the crimson staining our white rug, that illusion shattered into jagged, agonizing pieces.

"Arthur..." Victoria stammered, her voice instantly dropping its cruel edge, replacing it with a trembling, fragile tone. She took a step toward me, her hands reaching out. "It’s not what it looks like. I swear. Lily... she attacked me first. She has been so rebellious while you were away, I just—I lost control."

A choked sob came from the floor. Lily didn't look up; she couldn't. Her body was shaking violently, her hands pressing into the carpet just inches away from the brutal spikes of the durian shells.

"Don't," I whispered, the word carrying a weight that made Victoria freeze.

I bypassed my wife entirely, dropping to my knees beside my daughter. The smell of copper and sweat hung heavy in the air. As gently as I could, I brushed a strand of tear-soaked hair from Lily’s face. She flinched violently at my touch, her eyes wide with a terror that broke my heart into a thousand pieces.

"I've got you, Lily. Daddy's here. I'm so sorry," I murmured, my throat tightening as I carefully lifted her away from the agonizing shells. Her school uniform was ruined, the deep red welts across her back singing a song of pure malice. She collapsed against my chest, her small frames weeping silently, too exhausted to even scream anymore.

"Arthur, listen to me!" Victoria’s voice sharpened, the panic in her eyes morphing into something more calculated. "You are letting her manipulate you! She’s been stealing from my jewelry box, she’s been lying—"

"Pack your bags," I said, not looking at her. My voice was deadly calm, masking the tempest of fury raging inside me. "Get out of my sight, out of this penthouse, and out of our lives. My lawyers will contact you in the morning."

Victoria let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. "You think it’s that easy? You think you can just throw me out?"

I didn't answer. I lifted Lily into my arms. She felt impossibly light, like a bird with broken wings. Walking past Victoria, I felt her icy glare burn into my side, but I didn't stop until I reached Lily's bedroom. I laid her down gently on her stomach, immediately calling our family doctor and grabbed the first-aid kit.

For the next two hours, the penthouse was a battlefield of quiet agony. The doctor arrived, treating Lily's wounds with a grim expression. He gave her a sedative, and finally, she drifted into a restless sleep. I sat by her bedside, holding her hand, watching the rhythmic rise and fall of her shoulders. The guilt was a physical ache in my chest. How could I have been so blind?

By midnight, the doctor had left, and the penthouse was deathly still. I stood up, intending to ensure Victoria had left. The living room was empty; the belt was gone, and the durian shells had been kicked aside. A heavy silence hung over the home.

I walked into the master bedroom. It was ransacked. Victoria’s clothes were gone, her vanity cleared out. Relief washed over me, brief and fleeting, until I noticed something sitting on the center of the mattress.

It was a sleek, black digital voice recorder.

My brow furrowed. I walked over and picked it up. There was a sticky note attached to it in Victoria’s elegant, looping handwriting: “You think you know your perfect little girl, Arthur? Press play. Let’s see who the real monster is.”

A cold dread settled in my stomach. I looked back toward the hallway leading to Lily’s room, then down at the device. With a trembling thumb, I pressed the play button.

Static hissed for a second, and then a voice filled the empty bedroom. It was Lily’s voice, but it wasn't the voice of the crying, terrified girl I had just comforted. It was cold, detached, and chillingly calculated.

"...It’s almost time," Lily’s recorded voice said, speaking to someone else in a low murmur. "He’ll be home early. I made sure of it. Once he sees what she does to me, he’ll divorce her instantly. He won't question a thing. The medication I slipped into her tea makes her completely manic when she's angry. She won't be able to stop herself. And the best part? He'll give me whatever I want after this. The company assets, the trust fund... it's all mine."

Another voice, a muffled male voice on the other end of a phone line, asked a question I couldn't make out.

Lily’s recorded voice laughed—a sound that mirrored Victoria's coldness perfectly. "Of course the pain is real. You have to bleed if you want to win the grand prize. Victoria is stupid, but she's the perfect pawn. Just make sure the lawyers are ready to file the paperwork the moment he kicks her out."

The recording clicked, ending abruptly.

I stood frozen in the middle of the room, the recorder slipping from my numb fingers and thudding onto the mattress. My mind spun in a chaotic vortex. Was Victoria telling the truth? Was Lily, my sweet, grieving daughter, capable of orchestrating her own brutal abuse just to manipulate me and secure my fortune?

Suddenly, a sharp, piercing wail echoed from down the hallway.

It was Lily. She was screaming again.

I bolted out of the room, my heart hammering against my ribs. I threw open Lily’s bedroom door, expecting to see her waking from a nightmare.

Instead, the window was wide open, the curtains billowing wildly in the midnight wind. Lily’s bed was empty. Shadows moved on the balcony outside. I rushed to the glass doors and looked out into the darkness.

There, standing on the very edge of the penthouse railing, seventy stories above the city lights, was Lily. Her eyes were wide, staring into the abyss, tears streaming down her face. But she wasn't alone.

Stepping out from the shadows of the balcony, holding a syringe in her hand, was Victoria.

"One step closer, Arthur," Victoria hissed, her face twisted in a desperate, mad grin, "and we both jump. Or maybe... I'll just push her. Let's find out how much your secrets are truly worth."
